about basul parik

Hradcany Palace in Prague is currently exhibiting photographs that Basuls' grandfather took in 1920. Arno Parik, Basuls' father, also a successful photographer in Prague, abandoned his photo studio and lead the family's escape from communist Czechoslovakia in 1949. Immigrating to Chile, Arno re-opened his photo studio. Finally, in 1955, the family finally arrived in San Francisco and Arno created the "Professional Color Laboratory". Growing up in a photo lab was a great influence in Basuls' life. The ability to photograph, process the film and then print the pictures, all in a 'state of the art' color photo laboratory had many advantages. Basul was able to develop his high color contrast technique using kodalith film to block out the half tones. A good example is his portrait of Jerrry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. Another new technique was color solarization, which he used on album jackets for Cal Jader and Charly Mingus while working for Saul Zants of Fantasy Records. Using a long exposure on the then new zoom lens he captured the famous photo of Creedence Clearwaters' second album "Green River" and several more.
